Galaxy Cake

Vegan vanilla galaxy cake for a Starwars Angry Birds birthday.  Since it is not legal for me to make copies of licenced characters, this galaxy cake provided the back ground for the Angry Birds toys the client bought to put on top.  Double plus?  The kid loved being able to keep the toys once the cake was eaten.  My favorite part is the asteroid border.

Three Tiers for Thanksgiving!

We hosted a crowd last Thanksgiving, so to make sure everyone got exactly what they wanted I made a three tier cake with three different flavors.  The largest tier was chocolate cake with chocolate orange ganache and orange buttercream.  The middle tier was lemon cake with homemade lemon curd.  The top tier was a festive pumpkin spice cake with cinnamon cream cheese buttercream.  All three were crowd pleasers.

Roller Derby Cake

My same little derby friend needed a cake for her party, after her friends liked the cookies in school so much.  The cake was a surprise, and I kept texting her mom update pictures as I got the elements finished.

For my birthday, I wanted a Tardis.

And no one was going to get one for me, so I made one myself.

I was lucky enough to have a terrific friend who is a talented photographer document the process for me.  You can check out more of her work at http://www.debrajharveyphotography.com/.  I started off with a single 10 inch square chocolate cake.  Cut into quarters, and torted and filled with orange buttercream.  Since this will be a tall cake, I did two halves, which will be separated by a cake board and supported on dowels.

Then each half was coated in chocolate orange ganache.

Once they set up, I inserted dowels in the bottom layer to support the top half of the Tardis, and stacked the two cakes.  Then I touched up the seam before starting on the fondant.

IMG_7446Of course, you can’t bake a cake in my kitchen without someone wandering in to see what’s cooking.  This is my special helper.

And, since this was a cake for family consumption, I allowed a little taste testing.  Who could resist all that chocolate?

IMG_7415

Once stacked, it was time to start on the fondant.  The cake was covered in panels, and then strips were added to make the doors and paneling on the police box.

Finishing details were painted on with black food coloring, and the signs were printed on paper to be peeled off before eating.

And there we have it!  This was exceptionally fun to make, especially because it was for my birthday.

My little man is 8!!

So the boy that made me a mother just turned 8!  I can’t believe how time flies.  For this very special birthday I had a very special cake request.  We’ve been reading Harry Potter together, and he wanted Hogwarts Castle.  We typically have small intimate family only parties, so I had to scale the design way down.  It’s a loose interpretation, but we have the castle, the Whomping Willow, the Forbidden Forest, and the Black Lake.

The trees and the Whomping Willow are made of modeling chocolate.

The castle itself is cake with rice cereal treats for the roofs.

It was a magical birthday!

Peace, Love, and Cake

This was for a retirement party for a well loved and much to be missed psych nurse.  A gentle soul and a hippie at heart, this cake was right up her ally.  The top tier was chocolate with raspberry filling and vanilla butter cream.  The bottom tier was white cake with vanilla butter cream

Congrats to my cake giveaway winner!  Celebrating a birthday on Halloween with family, she requested fall leaves and pumpkin vines.  I took it one step further with some delicate white pumpkin gourds.

Connor Turns 6!

All of the birthdays in my family are in the fall.  One or two a month from October – January.  Add in Christmas and Thanksgiving, and that is one busy season for us.  To kick start the holidays, my middle kid just turned 6.  He asked for a dragon cake.  Sure thing sweetie, no problem!

Blue Dragon1

The dragon is made of sour cream pound cake.  The whole thing is cake, except for the head and the claws.  The head is rice cereal treats covered in fondant.  The claws and the tip of the tail are shaped from fondant and the wings are gum paste.

Blue Dragon2

The scales on his back and chest were individually cut and placed.  He’s sitting on a marbled green fondant field surrounded by some buttercream grass.  One happy dragon!  And one very happy 6 year old!
